Trump Blames France Unrest on Migration, Calls for Border Closure

Date:

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump on Monday attributed widespread unrest in France to immigration, calling on French authorities to shut the country’s borders without delay.

"The migrants have taken over France. They must close the borders, fast," Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.

His comments followed a statement Sunday in which he claimed that migration had "shattered that once great country," urging French leaders to restore control "before it is too late."

Protests across France initially began in mid-September, when students demonstrated over teacher shortages and inadequate funding for schools. The movement later widened into nationwide trade union strikes over inflation and the rising cost of living.

Tensions intensified over the weekend as several buildings were set ablaze, including the historic town hall in Limoges. Nearly 1,000 security personnel were injured during the unrest, according to the Interior Ministry.

Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin said Monday that police had detained more than 2,330 people across the country over the weekend.

In a televised address Sunday evening, French President Emmanuel Macron denounced what he described as “unrestrained violence” carried out by “insurrectionist elements from radical far-left groups, joined by numerous criminals.” He distinguished those involved in the violence from demonstrators raising legitimate grievances.

Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu announced Monday that he had directed regional officials to introduce targeted, localized curfews in an effort to prevent further episodes of rioting and looting.
