Zimbabwe’s Ruling Party Selects Mnangagwa for Future Presidential Race

Date:

(MENAFN) Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU-PF party has unanimously selected President Emmerson Mnangagwa as its candidate for the 2030 presidential election, following constitutional changes that shifted the expected election date from 2028.

The decision was reached at the party’s 23rd National People’s Conference in Chinhoyi, northwest of the capital, Harare. The gathering concluded on Saturday, with delegates endorsing Mnangagwa’s continued leadership.

“The Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front unanimously resolved to extend President Mnangagwa’s term beyond 2028 to 2030,” the presidency said on X following the conference.

The selection follows constitutional amendments signed into law by Mnangagwa in July. The changes extend his current term from 2028 to 2030 and lengthen presidential and parliamentary terms from five years to seven.

The amendments also eliminate direct presidential elections, providing instead for the president to be elected by parliament. The changes have altered the country’s electoral framework and the process through which its next head of state will be chosen.

Mnangagwa has led Zimbabwe since 2017, when a military coup removed longtime president Robert Mugabe. Before taking office, Mnangagwa served as vice president and was a longstanding ally of Mugabe.

If he remains in power until 2030, Mnangagwa will have governed the southern African country for 13 years. His party’s latest decision signals its intention to maintain his leadership beyond the current constitutional timetable.
