Türkiye Rejects Fidan Secret Meeting Claim as Disinformation

Date:

(MENAFN) Türkiye’s Embassy in Baku on Saturday denied claims in some Azerbaijani media outlets that Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a “secret meeting” while visiting Azerbaijan, calling the allegations baseless.

In a statement, the embassy took aim at a report titled Behind the Scenes of Hakan Fidan’s Meeting at GYF, which several outlets ran, led by an Azerbaijani news website. The embassy described the piece as part of a disinformation campaign by circles seeking to damage ties between Ankara and Baku.

The statement acknowledged that Fidan posed for courtesy photographs with numerous people during his stay in Baku, among them members of an organization that holds legal status in Azerbaijan.

“The allegations that our minister held a secret meeting and issued various instructions are categorically untrue,” the statement said.

The embassy said the claims rested on an alleged letter addressed to the Turkish parliament, which it said contained accusations unconnected to reality. It stressed that the purported letter did not exist.

According to the statement, the report’s references to “plans to interfere in internal affairs,” “intelligence operations,” “coup and chaos plots,” and “recruiting agents of influence” were deliberate falsehoods meant to turn Azerbaijani public opinion against Türkiye.

The embassy urged people in both Azerbaijan and Türkiye to reject the allegations and manipulative claims, which it said have no basis in fact.

The news website had reported that Fidan visited a foundation set up by Turkish philanthropists in Baku, where he allegedly held a secret meeting and gave various instructions. The report has since been taken down from the site.
