Mathernová Outlines How EU Is Helping Ukraine Prepare For Winter
“We have a whole series of interventions on energy. Our Energy preparedness package is worth close to a billion euros, and it's a combination of support to energy equipment repairs, the entire logistics and transport chain,” Mathernová said.
She explained that all the equipment provided to Ukraine by most donors is delivered through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.“We support the key state-owned enterprises, whether on electricity or on gas,” the diplomat said.
In addition, she said, the EU provides guarantees for loans and investments by international financial institutions aimed at developing renewable energy. A comprehensive“winter package” of humanitarian assistance has also been prepared for vulnerable households, including the provision of generators.
“And my colleagues are actively working with the ministry, the regional authorities, city authorities in many different places, and also with the energy companies, also going on the ground, monitoring, and trying to make sure that the assistance we bring is used efficiently,” the EU Ambassador to Ukraine said.
She added that the EU is also supporting measures to actively protect key energy facilities.
“And last, but not least, is the import of electricity that Ukraine can do because it's connected to the European continental grid,” Mathernová said, noting that the arrangement was introduced in the first days of the full-scale invasion and assuring that sufficient capacity is available for this purpose.
