Türkiye Seeks Removal of US Sanctions, Defense Industry Restrictions
(MENAFN) Türkiye is calling on the United States to remove sanctions imposed under the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) and end all restrictions affecting its defense sector, both direct and indirect, as negotiations continue over the transfer of six F-35 fighter jets originally manufactured for Türkiye.
“We have said before, our expectation is the lifting of CAATSA sanctions, which are incompatible with the spirit of alliance, and all direct or indirect restrictions on our defense industry,” Turkish Defense Ministry spokesperson Zeki Akturk said Thursday, responding to journalists’ questions after the ministry’s weekly briefing.
The ministry confirmed that discussions with US officials remain ongoing and voiced hope that an agreement would be reached in a way that reflects the two countries’ alliance and shared interests.
Türkiye Outlines Conditions for Potential Military Role in Saudi Arabia
Akturk also explained that any Turkish military involvement in Saudi Arabia through the newly established Mecca Defense Alliance would be subject to Türkiye’s Constitution and applicable laws.
The agreement, signed by Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in August, requires approval from the Turkish parliament. The ministry added that all necessary legal procedures authorizing the deployment of Turkish Armed Forces personnel overseas must also be completed before any deployment can proceed.
