Türkiye-EU Customs Union Talks Progress as Trade Reaches Record High

Date:

(MENAFN) Türkiye and the European Union are advancing discussions to modernize their Customs Union agreement through a “case-by-case basis” approach, with proposed updates covering e-commerce, public procurement, investment and agricultural goods, Türkiye’s trade minister said.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to Brussels, Trade Minister Omer Bolat emphasized the mutual importance of economic cooperation between Ankara and the EU. He highlighted that bilateral trade has expanded elevenfold over the past three decades, reaching a record $233 billion.

Bolat said the bilateral assessment had been completed following the adoption of Türkiye’s new public procurement law in late July. He added that technical discussions with European officials were already underway.

Although the EU Council has not yet formally authorized the European Commission to begin negotiations on modernizing the Customs Union, disagreements among certain member states have delayed the official mandate. Nevertheless, technical-level talks between the two sides have already started.

“We’re making progress on a case-by-case basis since the relevant issues have come up and authorities of the European Commission are conducting negotiations with us,” he said.

Bolat further noted that Türkiye has spent the past year working intensively to address concerns surrounding restrictive EU measures proposed under the draft Industrial Accelerator Act (IAA).
