MI5 Chief Warns of Growing Far-Right Terrorism Threat in UK
(MENAFN) The United Kingdom is experiencing an increasing threat from far-right terrorism, as cases involving anti-immigration and anti-Muslim grievances are more frequently developing into terrorist intentions, MI5 chief Sir Ken McCallum said Tuesday.
Speaking at the intelligence agency’s headquarters in London during his annual address, McCallum explained that far-right terrorism disproportionately involves younger individuals and is fueled by online activity.
He also warned that al-Qaeda and ISIS (Daesh) "continue to direct and inspire attacks” while the increased threat is also driven "in significant part" by extreme right-wing terrorism.
"Over the last year the most marked trend has been an increase in cases where extremist versions of anti-immigration and anti-Muslim grievance are tipping into terrorist intent," he said.
McCallum further revealed that MI5 had recently examined a case involving a "radicalized extreme right-wing 13-year-old here in the UK.”
"That investigation generated insight that enabled one of our international partners to prevent a lethal attack on their soil," he said.
