EU Calls for Full Implementation of Customs Union with Türkiye
(MENAFN) European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic said further steps are necessary to ensure the EU-Türkiye Customs Union is fully enforced and correctly applied throughout all member states.
Speaking at the EU-Türkiye Business Summit in Brussels, Sefcovic emphasized that strengthening commercial ties and updating the existing customs framework should remain central goals for both parties.
"There is still more work to be done," said Sefcovic, stressing that ensuring the "complete application and proper implementation" of the Customs Union, including its application to all member states, was a key requirement.
He explained that expanding the preferential trade framework as part of a modernization process could encourage greater commercial exchange and investment, further reinforcing economic relations between Türkiye and the European Union.
Sefcovic also identified closer integration of value chains as a shared strategic priority, noting that stronger collaboration would deliver "clear and visible" benefits to both sides.
He added that these initiatives could support faster trade expansion, increase investment flows and improve the integration of supply chains.
Pointing to the scale of existing economic cooperation, Sefcovic said bilateral trade in goods had reached a record value exceeding €217 billion ($242 billion), while services trade had surpassed €42 billion.
