Mumbai Worker Finds Wallet With Rs 6,000, Returns It Intact To Owner Wins Hearts Online
An entrepreneur in Mumbai talked about how a daily wage worker who makes about Rs 800 a day returned his wallet with all of its contents still in one piece, including Rs 6,000 in cash. This taught him an unexpected lesson in being honest. The worker could have kept the money and no one would have known, but he chose to give the wallet back instead, he said.
Manish Masih, co-founder and chief marketing officer of wealth management firm FINQY, wrote about the incident on LinkedIn. He said that it happened while he was getting ready for dinner and his housing society's security guard stopped by. The guard told him that a man with something important to him was waiting at the gate.
“First I thought, this is a prank. But I anyway went with the guard. At the gate, I met a daily wage earner, mid-twenties. Said he works at the shooting studios nearby," he wrote, adding that the worker had found Masih's wallet after he accidentally dropped it while getting out of his car.
“He found it, and brought the wallet to the security cabin," Masih said.“Inside was about Rs 6,000 in cash, along with all my IDs, debit and credit cards. For context, that money is roughly a third of his monthly income. Cash he could have easily kept without anyone ever knowing. Instead, he handed it back, intact."
“Real character is not what you do when everyone is watching; it's what you do when no one is," he said, admitting that, amid the excitement of recovering his wallet, he forgot to ask the worker's name or take a photo with him. Nevertheless, he decided to share the incident as a reminder that honesty and kindness continue to exist.
