Belgium Stresses Türkiye’s Role in Cutting Europe’s Strategic Dependencies
(MENAFN) Türkiye can help Europe reduce its reliance on external suppliers, particularly across vital industrial sectors, Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said Tuesday.
Speaking at the EU-Türkiye Business Summit in Brussels, Prevot noted that shifting international conditions, the continuing conflict in Ukraine and supply chain disruptions had exposed weaknesses in Europe’s economic structure.
"Türkiye has an important role to play, not only as an industrial market but also as a gateway to markets in the wider region," Prevot said, highlighting the country’s manufacturing strength, industrial expertise and access to surrounding markets.
He explained that European businesses are increasingly looking for dependable partners within closer geographical reach as they reassess the locations where they produce and store goods.
"We should make values of its proximity, particularly in sectors where Europe needs to reduce strategic dependencies," he added.
Prevot characterized Türkiye as a NATO ally, a candidate for European Union membership and a significant industrial economy positioned between Europe, Asia and the Middle East. He said the country’s industrial capabilities and regional connections could help strengthen the resilience of European supply networks.
