The Aerospace Connections in Education (ACE) plus program brings together members of a local Civil Air Patrol squadron and classrooms at a partnering school. The Dan River Composite Squadron has partnered with two classrooms at the Legacy Classical Academy in Reidsville, NC. Mrs. Brittany Harris teaches a seventh-grade class and Mrs. Cheryl Wilson teaches a sixth-grade class. Both have joined the Civil Air Patrol as Aerospace Education Members.

This Friday was the beginning of a partnership that brought the members of the Dan River Composite Squadron into the school to tell the students about the Civil Air Patrol and to bring aerospace education into the classroom. Mrs. Harris, who described herself as a weather geek, received an Acu-Rite Iris 5 in 1 weather station as a STEM kit from the CAP STEM Kit program. The squadron taught the students about the fundamentals of the earth's atmosphere and how weather is created and measured. The students also took part in several different experiments for hands-on learning about high and low pressure. The teachers along with all of the students also received purple ACE Plus t-shirts that were given by the squadron. Dan River Cadet Squadron Deputy Commander for Cadets, Capt. Mara Wooters stated,“It's nice to be able to see our members out in the community, especially at one of our local schools to be able to introduce STEM and Civil Air Patrol.”

Information about the ACE plus program can be located on the Civil Air Patrol webpage at ACE Plus | Civil Air Patrol National Headquarters. Local schools can reach out to the Civil Air Patrol to be partnered with their local squadron for collaboration. The Dan River Composite Squadron was the inaugural winner of the 2023 National ACE Plus Collaborative Team Award in conjunction with the Rockingham County Middle School.
