Israel Renews Strikes Across Southern Lebanon Despite US-Brokered Deal
(MENAFN) The Israeli military carried out fresh airstrikes and artillery attacks on several locations in southern Lebanon on Sunday, continuing its military operations despite a US-sponsored framework agreement signed in June.
Israeli warplanes targeted the town of Kfar Tebnit in the Nabatieh district, while additional aerial attacks struck Mansouri in the Tyre district. Artillery fire also hit Majdal Zoun, according to reports.
The bombardment extended into the overnight hours, when areas between Mayfadoun and Zawtar al-Sharqiyah came under heavy, concentrated artillery shelling. The latest attacks added to ongoing military activity across southern Lebanon, where communities continue to face the effects of repeated strikes.
The renewed bombardment comes amid an Israeli offensive against Lebanon that began on March 2. According to the latest figures from Lebanon’s Health Ministry, the campaign has killed 4,386 people and wounded another 12,413.
The attacks have continued despite a framework arrangement signed by Beirut and Tel Aviv in Washington on June 26 under US mediation. The agreement provides for a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory, followed by the deployment of the Lebanese army in areas vacated by Israeli troops.
However, Israeli military operations have persisted, with Israeli forces continuing to maintain control over parts of Lebanon. These include areas held for decades as well as locations seized during more recent wars and military operations.
The latest strikes highlight the ongoing challenges facing efforts to implement the agreement and reduce hostilities along the Lebanese Israeli border. Continued attacks and the presence of Israeli forces in Lebanese territory remain central points of concern as authorities seek to establish more stable security conditions.
