Türkiye Prepares to Submit Mecca Defense Pact to Parliament
(MENAFN) Türkiye has finalized preparations to present the Mecca defense agreement to parliament for approval, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said Thursday, emphasizing that the arrangement is intended solely for mutual defense and does not permit attacks against other countries.
"The necessary work for the agreement to be submitted to parliament has been completed," Fidan said during a joint news conference in Ankara with Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Anita Orban.
He explained that the agreement requires signatories to support one another if any member comes under attack.
"Once a country that is party to the agreement is attacked, you stand by it for its defense. This is not an attack agreement," he said.
Fidan further stressed that the pact does not give Türkiye the authority to send troops into another country’s territory for the purpose of launching an attack.
Addressing the Russia-Ukraine war, the Turkish foreign minister also cautioned against the conflict spreading into the Black Sea.
"We must never allow the Black Sea to turn into a new front of conflict," he said.
