Small Island Reappears in Lake Zurich as Water Levels Fall
(MENAFN) A small island has surfaced in Lake Zurich as the Swiss lake reaches an unusually low water level, according to reports.
The newly visible land lies near Stafa, a town on the eastern shore of the lake. Under normal conditions, the area is marked only by a rock known as the Stafner Stein.
The water level has fallen to 405.24 meters (1,329 feet) above sea level, exposing the small formation above the surface.
Despite its limited size, the island is large enough for a small boat to dock and for visitors to stop and have a picnic.
The formation was last seen 74 years ago when Lake Zurich experienced its previous significant low-water period. It also emerged in 1909 during another episode of exceptionally low water.
A water-level mark carved into the Stafa stone from that period has also become visible again after remaining submerged for decades.
The island is expected to stay above the water for some time, as the lake may need a considerable period to return to its usual level. No extended spell of rainfall is currently expected.
