Saudi Arabia Reports Injuries After Attacks Target Southern Airports

(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia said Tuesday that three people sustained minor injuries after attacks targeted two airports in the kingdom’s southern region, causing damage to airport facilities.

The General Authority of Civil Aviation said King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Jazan and Najran International Airport were both targeted in attacks on Monday.

Emergency response teams and other relevant authorities were deployed immediately following the incidents and acted under established emergency procedures, according to the aviation authority.

Three people suffered minor injuries and were transported to hospitals for medical care. The attacks also caused material damage at the affected facilities.

The General Authority of Civil Aviation said it was coordinating with security agencies to evaluate the extent of the damage and implement the measures required to protect passengers, airport personnel and the wider civil aviation system.

The Saudi statement did not identify those responsible for the attacks.

Yemen’s Houthis, however, claimed Monday that they had launched a series of missile and drone strikes against targets across Saudi Arabia. The group said some of the attacks targeted what it described as “sensitive sites” in Jazan and Najran.

The Houthis also claimed to have targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Abha Airport, an Aramco refinery in Rabigh and several military facilities.

Saudi Arabia condemned the Houthi attacks on Monday, saying civilian and economic facilities across the kingdom had been targeted and accusing the group of continuing its military escalation.

The reported attacks come amid a renewed increase in tensions between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. The Saudi-led coalition has reported intercepting ballistic missiles and drones aimed at Saudi territory in recent days.

The latest escalation adds to a long-running conflict involving the Houthis and Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which has received military support from a Saudi-led coalition since March 2015.

The Houthis seized control of Sanaa and expanded their presence across several parts of Yemen in September 2014. The conflict has since involved repeated cross-border attacks and military operations, with Saudi Arabia repeatedly reporting missile and drone threats originating from Houthi-controlled areas.
