Amnesty UK Chair Leaves Green Party Over Zionism Motion

(MENAFN) The chair of Amnesty International UK has resigned from the Green Party after members adopted a conference motion declaring that “Zionism is racism.”

Sandy Ruthven, who represented the Green Party as its mayoral candidate in Bristol in 2021 and finished second behind Marvin Rees, announced Sunday that the decision had become “the end of the line” for him.

In a LinkedIn post, Ruthven said: “My heart has always been with the Green Party of England and Wales and I have been a member for longer than I can remember.

“But this motion at conference marks the end of the line for me. I have resigned my membership.

“In seeking to court the hard-left vote, we have failed to confront prejudice when it appears on our own side.

“In doing so, we have led ourselves into a political cul-de-sac. I sincerely hope the party finds a way back.”

The Green Party’s decision triggered a joint statement from Bristol Central MP and former co-leader Carla Denyer, alongside the party’s five MPs, its leader and co-deputy leaders.

The statement said: “We will always uphold universal human rights … and we will continue to work to ensure that the Green Party is an anti-racist party in every way.”
