Guterres Heads to Pakistan for Talks, Disaster Preparedness Review

(MENAFN) Outgoing UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is set to travel to Pakistan this week for meetings with senior government officials and discussions on the country’s disaster preparedness, according to officials.

A UN spokesperson said on US social media company X that Guterres had departed for the previously arranged visit and was due to arrive in Pakistan on Tuesday morning.

During the trip, Guterres is expected to hold talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said the UN chief will remain in the country from Oct. 6-8 following an invitation from Dar. His schedule will also include a meeting with Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir.

Guterres is also due to visit the National Disaster Management Authority, where he will assess Pakistan’s progress in strengthening disaster preparedness and resilience following the devastating floods of 2022.

The visit marks his first trip to Pakistan since September 2022, when he traveled to areas affected by the floods and appealed for increased international assistance for the country.

He will additionally visit the Islamabad headquarters of the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan, known as UNMOGIP.

According to the UN, discussions during the visit will also cover Pakistan’s diplomatic and mediation efforts involving the United States and Iran.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said the trip will allow both sides to discuss regional and international developments while reaffirming the country’s “longstanding cooperation” with the UN.
