Fire Aboard Commercial Ship Off Romania Leaves Two Crew Dead
(MENAFN) Two crew members died and 11 others were injured after a fire erupted aboard a commercial vessel operating in Romania’s exclusive economic zone in the Black Sea, authorities said Monday.
Romania’s Interior Ministry said Coast Guard personnel were alerted after a fire broke out on the vessel as it sailed through the country’s exclusive economic zone.
The Romanian Naval Authority subsequently launched a search-and-rescue mission because the incident took place outside Romania’s territorial waters. Helicopters were also deployed as part of the operation, according to the ministry.
Two crew members were later found dead, while 11 others were transported for medical care after the vessel began to sink following the fire.
According to reports, the ship was transporting grain from Ukraine to Italy. Some reports also suggested that the vessel may have been struck by an unmanned aerial vehicle, although this claim was not independently confirmed.
'We attach importance to Black Sea security'
Türkiye’s Ambassador to Bucharest Ozgur Kivanc Altan said Türkiye remains committed to maintaining security, stability and safe navigation in the Black Sea.
“We are a country that supports security, stability and navigational safety in the Black Sea. We attach importance to Black Sea security, and we are making joint efforts for this,” Altan said.
