EU Expands Drone Defense with New Border Security Funding

(MENAFN) The European Commission has announced an additional €130 million ($145 million) to help European Union member states expand their drone and counter-drone capabilities while improving security along the bloc’s external borders.

The new funding is being provided through the Border Management and Visa Instrument (BMVI) as part of wider EU efforts to strengthen border monitoring and address emerging security challenges, according to an official statement.

The latest allocation follows €250 million announced in December 2025, along with another €169 million made available earlier this year to support surveillance drones and related equipment for the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, known as Frontex, as well as EU member states.

With the latest package, more than €500 million is now available through EU Home Affairs funding for surveillance and counter-drone technologies, the statement said.

The financial support is intended to help member states improve situational awareness, reinforce protection of the EU’s external borders and respond to threats linked to unauthorized or hostile drone activity.

The EU said the additional funding is part of a wider effort to provide national authorities with advanced technologies aimed at strengthening border management and improving internal security.
