Hungary’s Former Foreign Minister Rejects Claims Over BYD Investment
(MENAFN) Former Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto on Monday rejected allegations concerning his involvement with Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD and its investment plans in Hungary.
His comments followed an investigation by a national security committee, which decided in September to examine Szijjarto’s professional relationship with BYD and assess any potential national security concerns linked to it.
Speaking to reporters before appearing before the committee, Szijjarto said “false information” had circulated about BYD’s major investment in a vehicle production facility in Szeged, in southeastern Hungary.
He also said there were “serious misunderstandings” surrounding the project and its development.
Szijjarto argued that the financial support provided to BYD under the previous Fidesz-KDNP administration, led at the time by Prime Minister Viktor Orban, fell “well within” the normal framework used for major investment projects.
He further described attracting foreign direct investment as one of the “most successful aspects of his work as foreign minister.”
During his time in government, Szijjarto was responsible for coordinating state assistance, infrastructure development and diplomatic support for BYD as part of efforts to secure the company’s investment in Hungary.
After leaving that government role, he subsequently joined BYD, taking up a position overseeing external relations and new business development.
