Iraq Restores Direct Air Links with Iran
(MENAFN) Iraqi Airways is set to restart direct flights to Iran on Thursday, restoring regular air connections between the two countries with daily services departing from Najaf International Airport.
According to the airline, flights will operate to three Iranian destinations — Tehran, Mashhad and Isfahan — beginning Oct. 8.
The national carrier said the resumption is intended to make travel easier for passengers and reestablish consistent air transport between Iraq and the three Iranian cities.
Iraq’s Transport Ministry announced on Sept. 29 that Iraqi Airways had received a special exemption permitting it to resume operations to Iran. The authorization followed the completion of the necessary regulatory and technical procedures.
The airline had halted flights to Iran in early March as a “precautionary measure” amid rising military tensions between Tehran and Washington. Iranian airlines, meanwhile, suspended their services to Iraq on Sept. 23.
Separately, the office of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi announced on Oct. 2 that an agreement had been reached allowing Iranian carriers, excluding Mahan Air, to operate 40 daily flights to and from Najaf International Airport.
Al-Zaidi welcomed what he called a positive response from the US government to Iraq’s efforts to obtain the necessary exemption. He said the arrangement would help support travel for medical care, religious visits and tourism.
