Estonia Strengthens Border Defense Amid Rising Security Concerns

(MENAFN) Estonia is repositioning parts of its military closer to the Russian border while strengthening its ability to conduct long-range strikes under a newly adopted “active defense” approach, according to reports.

As part of the restructuring, the First Brigade of the Estonian Defense Forces is being permanently transferred from Tapa to Johvi, located roughly 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the Russian frontier. New military infrastructure is being constructed in the area to house the brigade.

Estonia is also developing a military facility in Narva, another city close to the Russian border. The site is expected to have the capacity to accommodate as many as 1,000 troops during a crisis.

According to reports, Estonian defense and intelligence officials do not anticipate Russia launching a full-scale conflict with NATO over the next two years. However, they are preparing for the possibility of a future confrontation and remain concerned about the prospect of a more limited military operation targeting Estonia.

The country is expanding its long-range firepower as part of these preparations. Estonia has agreed to acquire nine US-made HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, along with missiles capable of reaching targets up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) away. It is also purchasing nine South Korean Chunmoo systems that offer comparable range capabilities.

Estonia is simultaneously increasing its defense budget, with military spending projected to climb 42% this year to €2.4 billion ($2.8 billion). The allocation would represent 5.4% of the country’s gross domestic product.
