Fishing Vessel Capsizes Off Jeju with Two Crew Members Missing

(MENAFN) Two crew members, including an Indonesian national, remained missing Monday after a fishing boat overturned off the coast of South Korea’s Jeju Island.

The 29-ton coastal longline fishing vessel capsized in waters roughly 65 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Chagwi Island, located in the southern resort province of Jeju.

Nearby fishermen managed to rescue nine crew members, including eight Indonesians and one Vietnamese national.

The Jeju Coast Guard said another Indonesian crew member and the South Korean captain were still unaccounted for.

A search operation was launched involving a helicopter, naval vessels and patrol boats, with civilian fishing boats also assisting authorities in the effort to locate the missing crew.

The vessel had reported eight people aboard when it submitted its departure notification. Authorities later determined that 11 people had actually been on board.
