Pacific Leaders Push Ocean Focus Ahead of COP Climate Talks in Türkiye

(MENAFN) Pacific leaders gathered in Fiji on Monday for preparatory discussions ahead of the UN climate conference COP31, with ocean protection and the development of a sustainable blue economy emerging as key priorities before the major talks in Türkiye next month.

The Pacific Pre-COP31 meeting is taking place in the city of Nadi, bringing together regional leaders and officials to coordinate priorities and strengthen the region’s position ahead of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change conference.

Fiji’s Minister for Environment and Climate Change Lynda Tabuya called for oceans to play a much larger role in international climate negotiations, highlighting their importance to Pacific countries and communities.

“The ocean and blue economy must be central to our climate negotiations, and we must integrate the ocean-climate nexus into those negotiations,” Tabuya said.

She stressed that communities across the Pacific rely heavily on the ocean for food, employment, livelihoods and economic activity. As a result, she said, greater efforts are needed to protect marine ecosystems while promoting economic activities that can be sustained over the long term.

Tabuya also called for stronger international efforts to keep global warming within the 1.5-degree target. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that climate finance reaches communities facing the greatest climate risks more quickly and through fairer mechanisms.

According to the minister, Fiji intends to advocate for stronger measures covering several areas linked to ocean protection and climate action. These include cleaner shipping, expanded renewable energy, sustainable fisheries and improved conservation of marine environments.

“Our ocean is central to the climate solution and climate action cannot succeed without that being front and center.”

The Pacific countries are among those particularly exposed to the effects of climate change, with rising sea levels, changing marine conditions and extreme weather posing risks to communities and economic activities that depend on the ocean.

The discussions in Fiji are therefore intended to help Pacific countries coordinate their priorities before the wider international negotiations begin. Ocean-related policies, climate financing and measures to support vulnerable communities are expected to remain important issues for the region.

COP31 will take place in Antalya, Türkiye, from Nov. 9 to 20. The conference will bring countries together for negotiations on climate action, including efforts to reduce emissions, strengthen adaptation and mobilize financial support for nations and communities facing climate-related challenges.
