German State Premier Calls for EU-Türkiye Trade, Visa Reforms

(MENAFN) North Rhine-Westphalia Premier Hendrik Wust on Tuesday called for changes to the EU-Türkiye Customs Union and improvements to visa procedures, pointing to the strong economic and social links between his German state and Türkiye.

“No region is as closely connected to Türkiye socially and economically as North Rhine-Westphalia,” Wust wrote on X during his visit to Türkiye. “This close connection is a strength that we nurture.”

“To do that, we also need reform of the EU-Türkiye Customs Union and must improve visa procedures. I will continue to work toward this,” he added.

Wust met Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara at the beginning of his visit. He said their meeting, which lasted around 50 minutes, focused largely on economic cooperation and ties between Türkiye and North Rhine-Westphalia.

He added that he raised the issue of modernizing the Customs Union during the discussions.

Around one-third of Germany’s Turkish population lives in North Rhine-Westphalia, highlighting the state’s significant social ties with Türkiye.
