Seoul Says Kyiv Asked for Secrecy on North Korean POWs First
(MENAFN) South Korea escalated its dispute with Ukraine on Wednesday, insisting that Kyiv broke a confidentiality agreement over the handover of two North Korean prisoners of war (POWs) and that it was Ukraine that first asked for the matter to be kept secret.
The National Intelligence Service (NIS), South Korea's spy agency, said both governments understood from the outset that the transfer would remain confidential, a news agency reported.
In a briefing to the National Assembly's intelligence committee, the NIS said the two captured soldiers reached South Korea in mid-September and have no major health problems.
The transfer became public last week, when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed it in his address to the UN General Assembly.
President Lee Jae Myung and his office have since accused Ukraine of violating a nondisclosure agreement meant to shield the soldiers from the dangers they could face if the transfer were made public.
A Ukrainian presidential official reportedly denied that any such agreement existed. In response, South Korea's Foreign Ministry summoned Ukraine's ambassador on Monday and voiced strong concern over the denial.
