9 Americans Killed in West Bank: US Lawmakers Press Netanyahu
(MENAFN) A group of US House lawmakers is pressing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to act now against settler violence in the occupied West Bank, shield Palestinian communities and investigate attacks that have involved American citizens.
In a Sept. 24 letter, the lawmakers voiced “urgent concern” over the escalating violence.
“We write with urgent concern regarding the growing outbreak of extremist settler violence in the West Bank, including violence that has killed and threatened American citizens,” they wrote.
They warned that unchecked settlement expansion and violence could undermine Israel's long-term security, as well as prospects for peace, prosperity and freedom for both Israelis and Palestinians.
The letter cites figures the lawmakers say show a sharp rise in settler violence. Attacks by Israeli settlers, including incidents involving Palestinians and Israeli security forces, climbed 27% in 2025, they said. Serious incidents rose 63% in the first half of 2026 compared with the same period a year earlier.
Citing UN figures, they said 1,122 Palestinians, both civilians and combatants, were killed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem between Oct. 7, 2023 and July 24, 2026. They added that Palestinians have killed 67 Israelis in the West Bank since the start of 2023.
Settler violence has driven residents out of 107 communities since January 2023, displacing roughly 6,000 Palestinians, the letter states. Since the start of 2026, the UN has documented more than 1,380 settler-related incidents across over 250 Palestinian communities.
"Israeli settler attacks have made daily life unsafe for Palestinians across large parts of the West Bank,” they said.
According to the lawmakers, the attacks have hit Palestinian schools, farmers and families. Some residents report physical assaults, displacement from farmland and restrictions on their movement.
“Nine American citizens have been killed in the West Bank since January 2022. To date, no one has been held accountable for any of these nine deaths. Many of us have heard directly from constituents, including American citizens who have themselves been threatened or harassed by settlers without cause,” they added.
