EU Food Waste Reaches High Levels Across Member States
(MENAFN) The European Union generated approximately 129 kilograms of food waste per person in 2024, bringing the bloc’s total food waste to 57.9 million tonnes.
The overall volume rose by 0.7% compared with the previous year, according to figures released Tuesday.
Households were responsible for the largest share, accounting for 53% of all food waste, or around 69 kilograms per person.
Food and beverage manufacturers generated 19% of the total, equivalent to 25 kilograms per inhabitant.
Restaurants and other food service businesses accounted for 12%, producing about 15 kilograms per person.
Primary production and retail distribution each represented 8% of total food waste, with both sectors generating roughly 10 kilograms per inhabitant.
