UK Maintains Free Museum Entry for Tourists
(MENAFN) The UK government confirms that national museums across England will continue providing free entry to all visitors, including tourists from abroad.
“Everyone will continue to enjoy universal free admission to our world class national museums in England,” the government said in a statement Tuesday.
Officials had previously considered introducing entrance charges for international visitors to generate additional museum revenue, but the proposal has now been dropped.
The government said such fees could discourage people from visiting museums and warned that “the impacts and benefits of charging would not be felt equally across the sector.”
National museums generate more than £1 billion ($1.3 billion) annually for the UK economy and draw millions of visitors from across the globe.
“Seven of the UK’s ten most visited museums are national museums,” the government said.
The Natural History Museum welcomed 7.1 million visitors in 2025, while the British Museum recorded 6.4 million visitors.
The government also said it would cooperate with Arts Council England and museum representatives to create “a long-term strategic plan for the future of museums.”
“Further details will be released in due course,” it added.
