Myanmar Airstrike Kills Dozens in Northern Rakhine State
(MENAFN) At least 50 people were killed and 58 others injured when Myanmar’s military launched an aerial attack in Kyauktaw township in northern Rakhine state on Monday, according to media reports published Tuesday.
The strike targeted a bridge and a marketplace in the township, which is currently under the control of an opposition group, as stated by reports.
A military aircraft reportedly struck the Kissapanadi, also known as the Kaladan Bridge, along with a busy commercial area referred to as the “Indian Market.” Pedestrians, shoppers and workers were among those caught in the attack.
The assault on Kyauktaw, a coastal town situated along the Kaladan River, ranks among the deadliest incidents since junta leader Min Aung Hlaing assumed the presidency in April.
Myanmar has endured a prolonged civil war that escalated in February 2021, when Min removed the country's elected government from power.
Armed opposition movements, including several ethnic groups, continue to battle government forces across different parts of the country.
Rakhine state is predominantly inhabited by the Rohingya, a largely Muslim minority that has experienced persecution from Myanmar’s military authorities and other armed opposition factions. Over the years, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya have been driven from the Buddhist-majority Southeast Asian country.
