Trump Claims Canada Seeks Trade Deal with US
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump said Monday that Canada is seeking a trade agreement with Washington, while accusing Ottawa of imposing what he described as unfair treatment on the US.
"Well, they want to have a deal with us. They call us all the time," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked whether negotiations with Canada could still produce an agreement.
"The problem is that they've treated the United States very unfairly. They have been one of the worst countries in the entire world," he said.
Trump contrasted the relationship with Canada with Washington’s dealings with China, saying, "You know, we get along with China, we get along with the people, and we make good deals. But Canada has been really very difficult to deal with," he added.
He also accused Canada of imposing tariffs of 400% "and more" on US farmers.
"They take advantage of us. They feel entitled," he said.
Washington imposed a 50% tariff on roughly $20 billion in Canadian products after trade negotiations collapsed in August. Canada later introduced equivalent tariffs on Sept. 8.
The US then announced additional restrictions on certain Canadian imports, including motorcycles and whiskey, with the measures scheduled to take effect Sept. 29.
