Trump Offers Iran Sanctions Relief for Nuclear Progress, Officials Say
(MENAFN) President Donald Trump is prepared to grant Iran sanctions relief and unfreeze funds in return for concrete movement on its nuclear program, a US official told Axios and CNN on Monday.
Talks with Tehran are proceeding through mediators in a "positive and constructive" manner, CNN quoted a US official as saying. The official stressed that negotiators would not sign off on any deal until nuclear-related concerns were fully resolved.
The White House did not immediately answer a request for comment from media.
Speaking afterward, Trump said the United States is going to win the Iran war "one way or the other," and predicted it would happen "pretty quickly."
The potential diplomatic opening follows a sharp rebuff on Saturday, when Trump rejected an Iranian proposal designed to ease tensions and reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz. He called Tehran's conditions "unacceptable" as the Iran war entered its seventh month.
On Sunday, Trump said he expects further negotiations with Tehran this week, claiming Iranian officials "overplayed" their hand in earlier rounds of talks.
