Iran Files ICAO Complaint Over US Curbs as 5 Nations Halt Flights
(MENAFN) Iran has lodged a formal complaint with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) over US restrictions targeting its aviation sector, the head of the country's Civil Aviation Organization said Monday.
Abuzar Shiroudi told an Iranian official news agency that Tehran has submitted supporting documents and is pursuing legal and diplomatic channels to have the restrictions lifted and to restore routes it previously operated.
Direct flights to European countries are currently restricted, Shiroudi said. Travelers are instead routing through regional hubs, chiefly Istanbul, he added.
The move follows a wave of suspensions in the wake of new US sanctions on Iran's aviation sector. Iraq, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Oman and the United Arab Emirates have all recently halted flights to and from Iran.
Iran and Iraq also held talks on running flights between Tehran and Najaf rather than Tehran and Baghdad. Those Tehran-Najaf services were subsequently canceled as well.
