Lebanon's Salam Urges Rubio to Activate Israel Withdrawal Pact
(MENAFN) Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam pressed U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday to move toward activating the Lebanon-US-Israel tripartite framework, a mechanism meant to secure the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanese soil.
Salam made the appeal during talks with Rubio in Washington. Announcing the meeting in a statement on the U.S. platform X, he said the discussions covered developments in Lebanon and across the region.
"I stressed the need to move toward activating the tripartite framework and translating the principles of reciprocity and a phased approach into practical steps and tangible results on the ground," he said.
"This should lead to Lebanon regaining full sovereignty, achieving a complete Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory, and ensuring that the state holds exclusive control over arms across the entire country," he added.
Salam also pushed for a clear timetable to carry out the commitments in the U.S.-brokered framework that Lebanon and Israel signed on June 26. He called for a "credible mechanism" to monitor implementation and to keep violations from derailing the process.
The prime minister noted that the framework reaches beyond security arrangements, extending to relief, recovery, reconstruction and the return of displaced people. He urged Washington and the wider international community to back Lebanon's recovery, particularly in war-affected areas, and asked the United States to keep strengthening the Lebanese Armed Forces.
For his part, Rubio reaffirmed the U.S.'s "strong commitment" to helping Lebanon implement the framework, which he said "represents the only path to a durable peace between Lebanon and Israel," the US State Department said in a statement.
"Secretary Rubio commended Prime Minister Salam's government for its efforts to extend state authority and reaffirmed United States support for a sovereign Lebanese state outside of the pernicious influence of Hizballah and Iran," it added.
The U.S.-sponsored agreement calls for Israeli forces to withdraw gradually from Lebanese territory, with the Lebanese army deploying in the areas they vacate.
Israel has nonetheless kept up its attacks on Lebanon despite the deal. Since March 2, the strikes have killed at least 4,386 people, injured 12,407 and displaced more than 1 million, according to Lebanese authorities.
