EU Strengthens Defense Capacity Through Joint European Projects
(MENAFN) The European Council on Monday approved the first five European Defense Projects of Common Interest (EDPCIs), aimed at improving the bloc’s defense preparedness and strengthening its industrial capabilities.
According to reports, the projects bring EU member states together to develop capabilities covering drones and counter-drone technology, maritime and seabed security, space, air and missile defense, and the protection of the EU’s eastern flank.
The EDPCIs were established through the European Defense Industry Programme (EDIP), which the EU adopted in 2025.
The initiative is intended to allow member states to jointly develop military capabilities considered “critical” to Europe’s security and defense interests, particularly projects viewed as too large or complex for individual countries to pursue independently.
The five approved projects are now eligible for EU funding through EDIP, which will help support their initial deployment and create a foundation for possible additional financing through the planned European Competitiveness Fund.
"Today’s decision shows that Europe can be ambitious and deliver on its promises. Member States, together with the support of the EU, are joining forces, pooling their expertise and investing together in the capabilities we need," European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius said.
