UN Warns Gaza Winter Aid Covers Just 50,000 Households
(MENAFN) The UN warned Monday that Israeli restrictions and funding gaps are badly constraining Gaza's winter preparations. Available tents and shelter materials will cover only 50,000 households.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric urged swift action at a news briefing. "The Israeli authorities need to approve critical items, and they need to do so quickly," he told reporters.
He said aid workers are sounding the alarm. "Our humanitarian colleagues warn that funding shortfalls, as well as continued Israeli restrictions, are severely limiting preparations for the rainy season," he said.
In the first three weeks of September, humanitarian partners set up 170 reinforced tents to create community heating points at 88 displacement sites, Dujarric said. Those sites together host 10% of Gaza's population.
Far more is needed. "However, many more tents are needed, along with shelter kits, heaters, and sustained fuel imports," he said. "Thousands of heating points will be required to meet the needs of the people when the temperature drops."
Other work under way includes replacing worn-out shelters, unblocking drainage and identifying voluntary relocation options for people in flood-prone areas, he said.
The supply gap is stark. "Because of funding shortfalls, we and our partners estimate that the tents, tarpaulins, and sealing-off kits they have or are in the process of buying will only support 50,000 households," Dujarric said. He added that this figure is in addition to what member states and the private sector can bring in.
The war began in October 2023, when the Israeli army launched its offensive on Gaza. It has killed more than 74,000 people, injured over 175,000 and caused massive destruction. A ceasefire agreement was reached in October 2025, but Israel has continued its attacks and kept restrictions on the entry of food, medicine and shelter materials. Almost the entire population still faces severe humanitarian conditions.
