Seoul Orders Urgent Probe After DMZ Mine Blast Wounds 3 Soldiers
(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday demanded a rapid and exhaustive investigation into a land mine blast inside the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) last week that wounded three South Korean soldiers.
Lee spoke at a Cabinet meeting at the Blue House, one day after the military said preliminary findings pointed strongly to a North Korean land mine as the cause, a South Korean news agency reported.
“The military authorities must transparently reveal the truth behind the case by carrying out a swift and thorough investigation in close cooperation with the UN Command,” he said. “In accordance with that truth, we will take necessary measures,” he added.
The blast occurred on Sept. 21 as troops cleared a route for a joint inspection by the South Korean military and the UN Command into suspected North Korean mine-laying activity south of the Military Demarcation Line. Two soldiers suffered serious injuries, and a third was lightly hurt.
Lee also cautioned against circulating “groundless conspiracy theories” about the incident, arguing that national security must not turn into a partisan matter.
The president further urged South Korea to bolster its self-reliant defense capabilities through advanced weaponry, and directed officials to speed up development of nuclear-powered submarines and hypersonic missiles.
In separate remarks, Lee told officials to convert the results of his recent trips to the US and Mexico into concrete benefits for the country. He also pledged to give priority to housing, employment and financial services for low-income households.
