UN Panel Urges Stronger Digital Safeguards for Children
(MENAFN) Queen Mathilde of Belgium and spouses of several world leaders called for stronger international measures to protect children from online dangers during a UN panel organized by Türkiye’s Ministry of Family and Social Services in New York.
The panel, titled The Invisible Architecture: Building Safe Digital Systems for Children - Advancing International Standards and Shared Responsibility, took place at UN headquarters during the high-level week of the 81st UN General Assembly.
The event was held under the auspices of Turkish first lady Emine Erdogan, in cooperation with UNICEF and the Office of the UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children. Turkish Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Ozdemir Goktas also attended.
In her opening remarks, Queen Mathilde cautioned that rapid developments in artificial intelligence were exposing children to new forms of risk.
"Children cannot be the subjects of a global technology experiment or guinea pigs for business models based on data collection and attention," she said.
She emphasized that protecting children should be a core priority of AI governance, extending beyond parental controls, content moderation and data privacy measures.
