Athens Rejects Claims of US Threat Against Greek Government
(MENAFN) The Greek government on Monday rejected a media report claiming that US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle had threatened to bring down the government.
Greek government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis dismissed the allegation during a news briefing, saying there had been no such threat.
"I must say and be clear that there was never any question of a threat to the Greek government, and to be serious, such a thing would never be tolerated," he said.
Marinakis stressed that relations between Greece and the US are much "closer and more stable."
"It is a deep-rooted strategic relationship that is linked to mutual respect and shared values," he said.
He also described Greece as a "strategic partner" of Washington in the energy sector, saying the government is working to strengthen the country's energy position and geopolitical role in line with its national interests.
"There is no political blackmail for American LNG," Marinakis said.
His comments followed a media report discussing Guilfoyle's efforts to promote American liquefied natural gas across the wider Balkan region.
