US Restricts Canadian Imports as Trade Dispute Escalates

Date:

(MENAFN) A US ban covering roughly $1 billion worth of selected Canadian imports took effect Tuesday, adding another measure to the continuing trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa.

The restrictions target a range of Canadian products, including certain alcoholic beverages, dairy goods and motor vehicles, following an executive order signed by President Donald Trump.

Although the affected imports represent only a small portion of the approximately $880 billion in annual trade between the two countries, the restrictions signal another development in the broader commercial dispute involving the two long-standing trading partners.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the measures were introduced in response to what Washington described as discriminatory treatment by Canada toward key American exports.

The latest restrictions come after the US administration announced in July that it would impose tariffs of 50% on certain Canadian goods, accusing Ottawa of applying discriminatory practices against US products. Those tariffs took effect Aug. 22.

Canada subsequently responded with its own tariffs on selected US goods. The measures, ranging from 15% to 50%, entered into force Sept. 8.

The latest restrictions further add to the series of tariff and trade measures exchanged between the two countries as negotiations over their commercial relationship continue.
