US Dismisses Iranian Claim of Maritime Control Over Hormuz
(MENAFN) The US military on Monday dismissed an Iranian commander's assertion that Tehran has operational control over maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf.
“Iran has no navy because American forces sank it,” US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a post on social media.
CENTCOM said Iran does not control the strategically important waterway, pointing to the passage of thousands of commercial vessels and the transit of more than 1 billion barrels of crude through the corridor in recent months.
The statement followed remarks cited by Iranian state media from Army Chief of Staff and Deputy Coordinator Rear Adm. Habibollah Sayyari, who claimed that naval forces affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have full control over the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf.
Sayyari also said the army’s naval forces monitor the eastern route toward the Indian Ocean and warned that maritime traffic would not be allowed to pass.
Washington and Tehran have continued to accuse each other of imposing blockades in the strategic waterway amid the seven-month war between Iran, the US and Israel, which began with large-scale strikes in late February.
