Milei Orders Arbitration Against UK Over Falklands Oil Project
(MENAFN) Argentina will launch international arbitration against the United Kingdom over the Sea Lion oil project off the Falkland Islands, President Javier Milei announced Monday.
Writing on the US social media platform X, Milei said he had directed his government to act.
“I instructed the Foreign Ministry and our legal teams to initiate international arbitration against the United Kingdom for the illegal looting of our resources through the Sea Lion Project in the North Falkland Basin,” he said on the US social media platform X.
Milei also set a deadline for London. He warned that Buenos Aires will take the dispute to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea if the project is not halted.
“If in two weeks the United Kingdom does not stop the illegitimate exploitation, we will go to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea,” he added.
The Argentine leader restated his country's claim to the archipelago.
“the Falkland Islands are Argentine and they are defended with facts, not words.”
Argentina will keep pursuing legal and diplomatic measures against any activity involving the exploitation of natural resources around the islands, Milei said.
Buenos Aires regards the hydrocarbon operations as unauthorized because it claims sovereignty over the territory and its surrounding waters.
The Argentine Foreign Ministry recently lodged a formal protest with the British Embassy in Buenos Aires over the extension of offshore hydrocarbon licenses around the islands. According to Argentine media, the protest also targeted approval of a stake acquisition in the PL001 Block by Navitas Petroleum Atlantic Limited.
The companies plan to develop an offshore oil field in the North Falkland Basin, with production currently expected to begin in 2028.
The two nations have long disputed sovereignty over the islands, which have been under British control since 1833. They fought a 74-day war over the territory in 1982. Argentina maintains its claim, while the UK insists the islands are British territory.
Milei has repeatedly said Argentina's claim should be pursued through diplomatic means, while also seeking closer economic ties with the islands' population.
