Pastor Faces 8 Charges at Miami Trial Over Haiti President's Murder
(MENAFN) Christian Emmanuel Sanon, a Haitian-American pastor accused of helping orchestrate the July 2021 assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moise, went on trial Monday in Miami, Florida.
Sanon faces eight charges, among them conspiracy to kidnap or kill a person outside the United States. Prosecutors allege he helped finance the plot and arranged travel and lodging for himself and other participants.
According to the indictment, the scheme took shape in April 2021, when Sanon met in South Florida with a former Haitian senator and US businesspeople.
Moise was killed on July 7, 2021, when armed men stormed his home in Port-au-Prince and shot him. His wife, Martine Moise, was wounded in the attack. The killing was followed by a spread of armed gang control across large parts of Haiti.
More than 40 people have been charged in the US in connection with the assassination, and 12 have been convicted, including five serving life sentences, US authorities said.
The American case grew this year after authorities charged 30 additional suspects and moved 18 defendants from Haitian custody to the US. Among them are Joseph Felix Badio, a former Haitian government official accused of involvement in the killing, and 17 former Colombian soldiers accused of taking part in the operation.
Proceedings in Haiti, by contrast, have been repeatedly delayed. Judges have stepped down from the case over security fears, and armed gangs seized control of the courthouse in downtown Port-au-Prince.
Haiti has had no elected president since Moise's death and is preparing for presidential elections scheduled for December. The country remains gripped by gang violence that has killed thousands and displaced more than 1 million people in recent years.
