Shin Bet Targets Channel 12 Over Netanyahu's Secret UAE Trip Leak
(MENAFN) Israel's domestic security agency Shin Bet moved Monday to pursue legal action against Channel 12 over its disclosure of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's secret visit to the United Arab Emirates, according to his office.
The Prime Minister's Office said Shin Bet lodged a complaint with the chief military censor over the broadcaster's report, which it said aired before Netanyahu and his delegation had returned to Israel.
The office argued that the disclosure put Netanyahu, his wife and accompanying officials in danger. Those traveling with him included the Mossad chief, the head of the National Security Council, Netanyahu's military secretary and senior Shin Bet personnel.
Channel 12 reported Sunday, citing two unnamed sources, that Netanyahu flew by private plane to Abu Dhabi for a four-hour visit and met UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The broadcaster said the bulk of the meeting was held in private. Netanyahu's office declined at the time to offer further details.
The trip comes amid renewed scrutiny of reports that Sheikh Mohamed cautioned Netanyahu ahead of the Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel by the Palestinian group Hamas that the group might be preparing a major assault.
The New York Times reported Friday that Netanyahu received such a warning but did not relay it to Israel's security chiefs, echoing an earlier report by an Israeli newspaper.
