Syria Seeks to Reduce Unnecessary Government Expenditure

(MENAFN) The Syrian presidency on Monday directed government institutions to reduce public spending, eliminate unnecessary costs and reinforce fiscal discipline “under the current circumstances.”

The presidency’s General Secretariat instructed state bodies to “rationalize public spending, reduce unnecessary expenditures and reorder the priorities of investment projects according to their necessity and feasibility, while ensuring that the core functions of public bodies are not affected,” according to reports.

The measures will not apply to salaries and wages or expenditures required to sustain essential services, including health care, education, water, energy, security and public safety.

Essential operational expenses and preventive maintenance will also remain outside the cuts as part of efforts to tighten financial controls and make more efficient use of public resources.

The presidency further called for a review of previously approved investment projects based on their urgency and importance. Priority will be given to initiatives supporting essential services, public safety, and the protection of key assets and critical infrastructure.

The General Secretariat said the measures seek to “maintaining the balance of the state budget, strengthening fiscal discipline, improving spending efficiency and directing available allocations toward priorities and essential services.”
