Dutch Summon Israeli Envoy After Diplomats Expelled From West Bank
(MENAFN) Dutch Foreign Minister Tom Berendsen summoned Israel's ambassador Monday after Israel stripped the diplomatic status of several employees at the Netherlands' mission in Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank.
Berendsen announced the move at a joint news conference in The Hague with his visiting German counterpart, Johann Wadephul, a public broadcaster reported.
The affected Dutch staff have been ordered to leave Israel within seven days, according to the report.
Israel's decision followed new Dutch measures targeting Israel, including a ban on imports of goods originating from illegal settlements in the occupied West Bank and Golan Heights.
Berendsen called Israel's action "unnecessary" and said he wants Zvi Aviner Vapni, Israel's ambassador, to explain the details and consequences of the decision. The envoy is expected at the Dutch Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.
According to NOS, it is not the first time Berendsen has called in the Israeli ambassador. He was also summoned in May over what the Netherlands described as degrading treatment of activists aboard a Gaza-bound flotilla intercepted by Israel.
