South Korea Demands Ukraine Explanation Over Prisoner Disclosure
(MENAFN) South Korea summoned Ukraine’s acting envoy in Seoul on Monday and called for an official explanation and apology after Kyiv disclosed the transfer of two North Korean prisoners of war to South Korea.
First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoon-joo called in Ukraine’s chargé d’affaires, Andrii Vieshkin, to the Foreign Ministry and conveyed Seoul’s “stern position” regarding the disclosure.
Park expressed “deep regret,” accusing Ukraine of revealing information about the transfer at the UN General Assembly without Seoul’s consent, despite what South Korea described as a bilateral nondisclosure agreement.
Seoul also criticized a later statement from the Ukrainian presidential office rejecting the existence of such an agreement. South Korean officials described the statement as “false publicity” containing “untrue statements” that had seriously damaged confidence between the two governments.
Park called on Kyiv to provide a formal explanation, issue an apology and introduce measures to ensure that similar incidents do not occur again.
Vieshkin said he would convey South Korea’s position to the Ukrainian government, according to reports.
