Hungary's Parliament Strips PM Magyar of Immunity in Vote
(MENAFN) Hungary's parliament voted unanimously on Monday to lift the immunity of Prime Minister Peter Magyar, clearing the way for prosecutors to pursue a suspected theft case against the country's leader, media reported.
The vote came at an extraordinary session, and it passed even though the Immunity Committee had opposed the measure. Magyar himself pressed lawmakers during the session to strip his protection.
Prosecutors allege that in 2024 Magyar took a man's phone and threw it into the Danube River. The case is the basis for the theft suspicion against him.
The chamber did not stop with the prime minister. Lawmakers also voted to lift the immunity of two other members, Balazs Hanko and Miklos Sesztak, both of whom are under investigation, according to the prosecution service.
Sesztak is suspected of bribery and other offenses in the Volanbusz case. Hanko faces an investigation over suspected mismanagement in the National Cultural Fund case.
