Search Operation Recovers Two Bodies from Ferry Off Girne
(MENAFN) Two bodies were recovered Monday as underwater search efforts continued for passengers still missing after a ferry sank off Girne in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on Aug. 30.
A statement from the TRNC Prime Ministry said teams were conducting seabed searches around 1,000 meters (3,281 feet) from the wreck at a depth of approximately 570 meters (1,870 feet).
The statement said DNA testing had begun to determine the identities of the two recovered bodies. Their families will be notified after the identification process is completed.
“As the state, we will continue search operations until we reach our missing passengers. We once again ask God’s mercy for those who lost their lives and wish patience and strength to the families of the missing,” the statement said.
The Filo Jet, a high-speed passenger ferry connecting Girne Port in the TRNC with Tasucu Port in Mersin, began taking on water from its bow shortly after leaving Girne around midday on Aug. 30.
The vessel attempted to return to port but eventually sank.
There were 267 passengers and crew members aboard the ferry. A total of 239 people were rescued following the sinking, while 15 passengers were confirmed dead.
The wreckage was subsequently located off Girne at a depth of 554 meters (1,818 feet), with search teams continuing efforts to locate the remaining missing passengers.
