Protesters Challenge UK Foreign Secretary Over Gaza, Group Ban
(MENAFN) Pro-Palestinian demonstrators confronted British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband at a restaurant in Liverpool on Sunday, calling on him to reverse the government’s ban on Palestine Action and recognize Israel’s conduct in Gaza as genocide.
The confrontation occurred as protesters staged a sit-in outside the venue hosting the Labour Party’s annual conference. Around 200 demonstrators displayed signs stating, “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action,” while opposing the organization’s designation as a proscribed group.
At the restaurant, one protester directly addressed Miliband, saying: “We would like you to deproscribe Palestine Action. We’d like you to declare genocide in Gaza.”
“If you want to have a conversation with us, come and talk to us as we are being arrested,” the activist added, while also noting that they had supported Miliband during the 2010 Labour leadership contest.
Another demonstrator said people gathered outside were being detained for engaging in peaceful protest and called on the foreign secretary to speak with them over the government’s decision.
Protesters claimed that 200 people were being arrested. Merseyside Police, however, said more than 50 arrests had been made by Sunday evening, explaining that officers were detaining individuals suspected of possessing material expressing support for a proscribed organization.
Palestine Action has carried out protests and direct actions against businesses linked to Israel. In June 2025, members of the group entered RAF Brize Norton, where they sprayed red paint over military aircraft and placed Palestinian flags on them. The British government subsequently proscribed the organization the following month.
